2012 NRL Results & Review2012 NRL Review Round 11

Wests Tigers v Warriors

A cracker of a match to kick off round 11 of the NRL with the Tigers using the Leichardt faithful to their advantage in a thrilling 2 point win over the Warriors. The Warriors were quite shocking in the second half after racing out to a 10 nil lead at the halftime break, their intensity was just not their and the Tigers looked like they wanted the win more.

Bill Tupou and Ben Henry got the Warriors off to a great start and their defence held strong in the first half. The Tigers were further hampered when makeshift 5/8 Chris Lawrence was ruled out of the remainder of the match with a slight hamstring strain.

The Tigers were the first to score in the second half despite the setback when Beau Ryan got the Tigers on the scoresheet. Lote Tuqiri scored just a few minutes later and Benji added the extras to put the Tigers in front 12-10 with half an hour to play. It was all the Tigers from this point and despite a Konrad Hurrell try in the 54th minute the Tigers looked like they were on top.

Matt Utai put the Tigers back in front with a good try just 9 minutes later and Tim Moltzen wrapped up the match with just a couple of minutes remaining to give the Tigers an unlikely win in the absence of skipper Robbie Farah. Konrad Hurrell managed a late consolation try to further enhance his reputation as a deadly finisher but the Tigers somehow managed to turn this one on its head after a dismal first half.

North Queensland Cowboys v Penrith Panthers

The Cowboys managed a thrilling victory here, getting home by 2 points over the Panthers in a topsy turvy affair, however it came at a cost with NSW hopeful Tariq Sims stretchered off in the second half with a suspected broken leg. His season could well be over and his Origin dream for 2012 is in tatters. Sims broke the same leg last season and you have to feel for the bloke, he was notified today that he would be joining the Blues squad tomorrow as 18th man. A devastating blow to Sims, the Blues and the Cowboys.

Despite the loss of their rampaging back rower, the Cowboys managed to get the 2 points, by 2 points after the Panthers gave them an almighty fright. The Panthers went into the sheds at 12-10 in front and you could just tell this one was going to go down to the wire.

The second half started in blistering fashion for the Cowboys with 2 quick tries to Gavin Cooper and Antonio Winterstein before the Panthers bounced back with one of their own to trail 22-18. The Cowboys opted for a penalty to take the lead out to 24-18 before Sims unfortunate incident, he was looking to make a cover tackle and as he went to ground he was caught on the leg by a Panthers play on the way down. A freak incident and it looks like he has broken the leg in the same place as last season.

This appeared to rattle the Cowboys and the Panthers capitalised with a quick fire double to Brad Tighe and Josh Mansour putting the Panthers in front 28-24. The Cowboys weren’t done with yet though as 4 minutes later Tariq’s older brother Ashton pounced on a loose ball to give the Cowboys a 2 point lead that they did not relinquish.

Reading The Play NRL 2012 Preview

St George-Illawarra Dragons v South Sydney Rabbitohs

Kogarah : Sunday 3pm

Hard to have the Dragons here even with a return to Kogarah where they have won 10 of their last 11, they are limping off the back of some very ordinary form and now a quickly thinning list with at least 6 key players unavailable (Merrin, Creagh, Weyman, Fien, Scott and Prior). The loss of Merrin, Weyman and Creagh off last Monday is significant, they’ve been poor through the middle in numerous games this year and this becomes most notable when their 2nd string rotation is on the field, they will now be relying on them to get the job done and I think be found well short. Rabbits come off a credible win over the in form Sharks then a bye freshen up, they too lose key players in Taylor and Inglis, the later who has been in outstanding form but they look to have far more credible top grade replacements in particular with the switch of the talented Merritt to fullback. They will have taken considerable confidence out of their last two wins over the Sharks (3rd) and Cowboys (4th), and they’ve the forward strength to get the job done through the weakened middle. Luke, Sam Burgess and Sutton should lead the way here, Reynolds form continues to improve, they’ve a poor record at the ground but if ever they were to get the chance to turn that around then this is it. Rabbits

Last Word : Like the Rabbits, Maguire has them improving each week, importantly they are growing in confidence.

2012 NRL Preview Round 11

Round 11 of the NRL kicks off tonight and we have a shortened version this week due to State of Origin on Wednesday night with 6 teams having the bye. We’ll preview Origin 1 in a couple of days so keep an eye out for that one. In the meantime check out our preview of round 11 of the NRL below and be sure to let us know your thoughts on this week in the comments.

2012 NRL Preview - Round 11

Wests Tigers vs Warriors – 2012 NRL Round 11
Leichhardt Oval, Friday 18 May, 7.45pm (EST)

This round 11 clash has all the earmarks of a classic knowing the styles of both sides usually give us an entertaining brand of football. The Tigers on a Friday night usually throw up some interesting performances and the Warriors are a team that you don’t see much of on Friday night football these days.

The Tigers are coming off a bye last week while the Warriors are coming off a 30-26 win over the Roosters across the Tasman. Before the bye though, the Tigers escaped with a 15-14 win over the Titans in golden point thanks to a Robbie Farah field goal. They will be without their skipper for this one as he lines up for the Maroons on Wednesday night, for the first time since 2009. He is replaced, in a somewhat bold move by Tim Sheens, with Tom Humble.

The Warriors were fortunate to come away with a victory in that match against the Roosters with the lead changing several times before the Warriors looked to have put the game to bed. The Roosters didn’t give up though and scored with about 5 minutes remaining to set up an exciting finish. They held on for the win but that was soured by a season ending knee injury to Jerome Ropati. He was dropped in a shoulder charge by Boyd Cordner which was put on report, in the process Ropati did his ACL while falling to the ground. A massive blow to the Warriors and they’ll need someone to step up in his place for the rest of the season.

This should be a cracker if previous matchups are anything to go by, most notably last season’s semi final where the Warriors scored a last minute try through Krisnan Inu in controversial circumstances. The Tigers will be looking for revenge after that disappointment and will be looking to continue on their winning ways tonight. The home crowd at Leichardt should be enough to get the Tigers over the line.

Sports Banter Tip – Tigers

North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers – 2012 NRL Round 11
Dairy Farmers Stadium, Saturday 19 May, 7.30pm (EST)

This match has been hit quite hard by Origin with Thurston, Tamou, Scott and Tate missing for the Cowboys, while the Panthers are without Luke Lewis and Michael Jennings (who probably would have been missing anyway). The Cowboys can count themselves lucky that they still have the services of Tariq Sims though as he was somehow left out of the Blues side for game 1.

The Cowboys are in the top 4 and are coming off the back of a solid 32-12 win over the Knights last weekend. That win was basically set up by some individual brilliance from captain Jonathan Thurston so they will be needing Ray Thompson and Matty Bowen to step up in the creative department this week. In a bit of a reshuffle, Neil Henry has promoted Michael Morgan from the bench to wear Thurston’s No.6 jersey, with Antonio Winterstein moving from wing to centre to cover for Tate. Faifai Loa takes Winterstein’s wing position.

The Panthers will miss the experience of Luke Lewis who was superb in their 13-12 golden point win over the Dragons on Monday night. They’ll need that same intensity if they are thinking of coming back from Townsville with the 2 points. On the plus side, the Panthers have won 9 from 14 matches played at Dairy Farmers Stadium, a good record and one they will rather focus on then the 30-18 in the corresponding fixture last season.

This should be an entertaining game and the Cowboys actually have a fair amount of depth now to cope with the loss of their superstars, something that could not be said of previous seasons. For this reason I think the Cowboys will have too much for the Panthers, I feel the loss of Lewis will outweigh the loss of Thurston here.

Sports Banter Tip – Cowboys

Manly Sea Eagles v Sydney Roosters

Brookvale Oval, Sunday 2.00pm

Sunday afternoon sees to classic all-Sydney clashes, the first of which is the Sea Eagles taking on the Sydney Roosters.

The Sea Eagles come into this clash with the team starting to click. Its been a slow start to the year for Manly, however recently they have fought hard to get some wins on the board. Their challenge here is how well they adapt to the origin period, with the Stewart brothers, Buhrer and Williams all called into the New South Wales side. Cherry-Evans is also in the extended Queensland squad, however he will play here.

The Roosters are only missing Mitchell Pearce, coming off fairly lightly as far as origin disruptions go. Their recruit of Daniel Mortimer will pay dividends here, slotting into the halfback role. However the issue I see it is not that Mortimer is a poor replacement, it is that Braith Anasta is likely to play an increased role for the Chooks. This can only be bad.

I see this game as a battle between the halves, and I think the combination of Cherry-Evans, Foran and Balling will be too strong. I expect Manly to come away with the points, and I’m very tempted to take them 13+.

Sports Banter Tip – Sea Eagles

St George-Illawarra Dragons v South Sydney Rabbitohs

WIN Jubilee Oval, Sunday 3.00pm

Sports Banter Tip – Rabbitohs

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs v Cronulla Sharks

ANZ Stadium, Monday 7.00pm

Monday Night Football features the high flying Sharks taking on the Bulldogs, and with the Sharks proving the surprise packet of the year, this game should be a cracker.

The biggest issue here though will be how well Cronulla go without Gallen and Carney. Last week they showed they can win without their inspirational captain, over Melbourne no less, however the loss of both him and Carney could well be a different matter. Robson has re-invigorated his career, moving to the Sharks – this though is going be a test for him, leading the team around on his own. Graham will slot into 5/8, however he wont bring the same spark Carney has.

The Bulldogs last week suffered an embarrassing loss to the Titans, and will want to make amends here this week. No wonder Dessie needed a hair cut during the week, he probably pulled half of it out at Suncorp last Friday. With Morris called up to State of Origin, they lose a bit of strike power out wide.

However the strength of the Bulldogs is their forward pack, a group of hard workers that win the battle up the middle. This should be a great clash against the Sharkies pack, however I think in the end, the dogs will be able to capitalize on an understrength Sharks.

Sports Banter Tip – Bulldogs

2012 NRL Teams – Round 11

With Origin taking precedence in the coming week, there are only 5 NRL games this weekend and there will no doubt be plenty of changes for the sides that weren’t fortunate enough to get the bye. With the Sharks missing Gallen & Carney, the Roosters will be wthout Pearce, Sea Eagles without the Stewart brothers, Buhrer and Tony Williams. The Storm and Broncos, the hardest hit by Origin, are lucky that they receive the bye this weekend along with the Knights, Eels, Titans and Raiders.

The Cowboys weren’t so lucky and will need to do without Thurston, Tate and Tamou, they can at least be thankful for the fact that Tariq Sims was not selected by the Blues. Not so lucky were the Tigers, who will need to do without skipper Robbie Farah as he earns a recall to the Blues, his first match since the 09 series.

The Dragons will be without Merrin and Creagh as they were selected for the Blues, and they may also be without Weyman, Fien and Soward depending on how their injuries go over the next few days. Weyman appears to be the main concern, he needed to be stretchered from the field against the Panthers on Monday night.

Check out all of the team news below and be sure to let us know your thoughts on the sides named. Also, check out our State of Origin page for latest information relating to the big game Wednesday week.

State of Origin 2012 – NSW Blues Side for Origin 1

The time has finally arrived! The make-up of the NSW VB Blues for State of Origin 2012 – Game 1 has been announced. A few selection surprises with Jamie Buhrer, Trent Merrin and Ben Creagh, otherwise I think the team is as I thought it would be.

Jennings and Hayne have been selected despite their poor club form which shows the amount of faith Ricky has in these two. They bring the X-Factor to the Blues side and I think it’s a good move to include them in the side. NSW will not beat Queensland by trying to contain them, they need to fight fire with fire and I think their selections along with big Tony Williams is a bold move.

I’m a bit surprised that Creagh and Merrin were selected, Creagh has had his chances in Origin and has never really impressed, while Merrin didn’t get much of a chance last year. Buhrer was the bolter which was leaked a week or so ago in all the papers, and I think that it is a strange move considering the Blues already have Bird and Lewis who can play the utility role of needed. I would have much preferred to see Tariq Sims be given a go.

What are everyone’s thoughts on the side below? Do the Blues have a chance of ending Queensland’s 6 year dominance with this side? Let us know in the comments!

2012 NRL Results & Review2012 NRL Review – Round 10

Brisbane Broncos v Manly Sea Eagles

What a match, the Broncos did everything possible to win this match but in the end the Sea Eagles held their nerve and got themselves out of jail with a last minute try to David Williams. All of the stats pointed to a Broncos victory with more possession, completed sets, less tackles and more metres gained.

The Sea Eagles just managed to hold the Broncos out with their resolute defence and the Broncos were obviously missing key play maker Peter Wallace. His kicking game would have kept the Sea Eagles at bay more and you could tell they missed his experience last night.

The key moment for me was the try to Steve Matai right before half time. The Broncos had built a 12-8 lead going into the break after the Sea Eagles took an early lead through Jamie Lyon. That try gave the Sea Eagles a 14-12 lead at the break and the Broncos will rue the lack of accuracy in Corey Parker’s boot as he missed all four conversion attempts. Corey Norman took the last one and although it was good, it wasn’t enough to hold off the Sea Eagles who have now moved up into the top 4.

The Sea Eagles, and NSW, will have some anxious moments over the next few days as Anthony Watmough had no feeling in his arm after the match. Glenn Stewart, while not placed on report, may come under some scrutiny for a high shot on Corey Norman in the first half. Ricky Stuart will no doubt be worried about both players with the Blues to be named tomorrow night.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs v Gold Coast Titans

What can you say about this one! There will be plenty of punters still in last man standing competitions that will have woken up this morning with sore heads. I didn’t see this one coming, the Bulldogs hit back last week putting 42 unanswered points on the Eels while the Titans lost in heartbreaking fashion against the Tigers. I didn’t think they could bounce back but they proved me wrong last night.

The first half was a torrid affair with the Bulldogs going into the break with a 6-4 lead thanks to a Ben Barba try, while the Titans got over the line through Scott Prince, back from a bicep injury for this match.

The Titans went out to a 20-6 lead within 20 minutes of the restart and it looked to be all over. Tries from Srama, Idris and Minichiello all but wrapping up the points for them. Some nervous moments late on for the Titans though with Barba and Josh Morris scoring in the 59th and 69th minutes to set up and exciting finish. Goodwin couldn’t convert the tries and with the Dogs down 20-14 they conceded some silly penalties which the Titans took advantage of before Aidan Sezer put the icing on the cake with a field goal in the last minute to run out 25-14 winners.

The Bulldogs have some concerns heading into their next match with Sam Kasiano placed on report for a shoulder to the head of Luke O’Dwyer, he could be in trouble if recent incidents are anything to go on. They also lost David Stagg in the second half to an ankle injury.

Warriors v Sydney Roosters

This game can only be described as controversial. I think when we look back at this match we will be saying this is when the shoulder charge was completely eliminated from the NRL as a legitimate shot. Boyd Cordner was placed on report for a tackle where his shoulder made contact with Jerome Ropati’s, and their heads clashed. Ropati stayed down as he had injured his knee, video ref intervened, didn’t see the head clash, placed Cordner on report and then penalised the Roosters.

If this wasn’t enough, in the last 10 minutes, a Warriors player was penalised for a “chicken wing” tackle, and not placed on report. Then Cordner was penalised again for a shoulder charge which made absolutely no contact with the head whatsoever!

It was a shame too, as this was a damn good game of football. End to end, both teams looking to attack and after a cagey opening 20 minutes both teams unleashed and the points started to flow freely. The Roosters were first on the scoreboard through B J Leilua after a deft kick from second rower Aidan Guerra. He scored one of his own not long after but Anasta failed to convert both tries leaving it open to the Warriors.

They obliged and scored two tries through Conrad Hurrell before half time, Maloney converting both to take a 12-8 lead. The Roosters got a penalty on halftime to go into the sheds down 12-10. The second half was more of the same but this is where the controversy began, the referees losing control of the match late on.

Tautau Moga got the try he deserved on debut after being denied on in the first half, which looked good to me, the Roosters taking the lead once again. The match then went end to end with both teams exchanging tries through Shaun Johnson for the Warriors, Warea-Hargreaves for the Roosters and then Johnson again to put the Warriors back in front. Manu Vatuvei then leapt above everyone to give the Warriors a 30-20 lead before the Roosters scored through Minichiello late on to give them a faint chance.

The game ended in controversy with a number of calls going against the Roosters with less than a minute to go, the referees even calling the game short by 10 seconds as confusion reigned! A cracking game but we’ll be hearing plenty about some of the incidents in the coming week I feel.

Newcastle Knights v North Queensland Cowboys

Jonathan Thurston orchestrated this win and he is hitting form just at the wrong time is you are a Blues supporter. He had a hand in 4 of the Cowboys 5 tries and kicked 6 goals to put the Cowboys into the top 4.

Refereeing decisions marred another game here with Kane Linnett denied a certain 4 pointer when it looked at though he got to the ball before Uate. This was after Junior Sa’u got the Knights off to a flyer in the 9th minute. The Cowboys hit back though with tries to Ray Thompson and Ash Graham before the break to give the boys from North Queensland a 12-6 lead.

The Knights hit back on half time through Chris Houston to send the players into the sheds at 12-12.

After the break though, it was the Jonathan Thurston show. Setting up 3 tries to the Cowboys and nailing a penalty goal in the 78th minute to send the Cowboys out to a 20 point lead. After that display Thurston now leads the Dally M table with 15 points, Mal Meninga must be rubbing his hands together after that performance.

Canberra Raiders v Parramatta Eels

The Eels opened the scoring in this match through centre Ryan Morgan before 4 unanswered tries to the Raiders left the Eels reeling 24-6 at half time. The second half started the same as the first with the Eels getting over the line through Cheyse Blair, before Ken Sio gave Parramatta fans some hope with another soon after.

That was short lived though with the Raiders piling on two more tries through Joel Thompson and Reece Robinson to take the Raiders out to a 36-18 lead and the match was all but over. Not so for the Eels though, another spirited fightback saw the Eels score 3 tries in succession through Morgan and Sio again, before Chris Sandow went some way to living up to his $500k paycheck to get the Eels within touching distance. Luke Burt missed the first conversion which would have got the Eels to 36-36 and in the end it proved crucial.

The Raiders got out of jail with a late try to youngster Jack Wighton to put the game to bed but had Luke Burt not missed the conversion attempt at 36-22, the Eels would have been looking for a field goal to win the match rather than a try.

An unbelievable game of rugby league, end to end stuff where both teams resembled turnstiles in defence.

Cronulla Sharks v Melbourne Storm

If the Raiders v Eels game lacked defensive nous, this one was the complete opposite! Even more impressive was the Sharks win over the premiership favourites without inspirational captain Paul Gallen. This win will show other teams in the competition that it is possible to beat the Storm, and heading into Origin there will now more than likely be a bit of a level up in terms of the table.

The Storm led this one for most of the game after tries to Dane Nielsen and Matthew Duffie bookended a try to Sharks centre Isaac Gordon, back from a 10 week suspension, with the Storm taking a 10-6 lead to the main break.

The second half was a defensive battle with the Storm even going down to 12 men when Billy Slater was adjusted to have obstructed Jeff Robson in the Storm in goal. He was sent to the bin for 10 much like he was for the Kangaroos in that recent ANZAC Test. Despite the loss of Slater, the Sharks just could not break down the Storm’s defence and it took until the 71st minute for the scoreboard to tick over again. Jeremy Smith barged over from dummy half to give the Sharks a chance of leading the Storm for the first time. Carney converted the try and the Sharks held on for a couragous win to knock over the Storm for the first time in the 2012 NRL season.

Penrith Panthers v St George-Illawarra Dragons

A genuine game of two halves this one. The Panthers got out of the blocks quickly with three tries going begging in the opening 20 minutes before Ryan Simpkins and Kevin Kingston got them started. They were all over the Dragons in the first half and this one had all the earmarks of a massive upset win to the Panthers. The Dragons hadn’t turned up and they were lucky to only be down 12-0 at half time.

Steve Price must have put something in the Dragons water bottles at half time as they came out a different side altogether. Neither side managed to add to the scores though until rookie Jake Marketo crossed for the Dragons after 65 minutes, game on! 8 minutes later Mitch Rein scored and Kyle Stanley added the extras to bring the scores level with just 5 minutes on the clock.

Golden point for the first time in Monday Night footy this year, and it didn’t take long for the field goal shots to commence, Hornby missing an attempt early before Lachlan Coote, to his surprise received the ball 25m out. He made no mistake and afterwards admitted he was surprised as Travis Burns should have been lining up the shot. A fantastic win for the Panthers which broke an 8 game losing streak at home.

In bad news for the Dragons, Michael Weyman was carried off in the first half with a suspected serious knee injury, while stand in 5/8 Nathan Fien also limped off just before golden point. The prognosis on these two should be known today.

2012 NRL Preview – Round 10

Round 10 of the NRL kicks off this week, and with the last chance for players to impress State of Origin selectors, players will be keen for a big one. Here is Sports Banters 2012 NRL Preview for round 10, complete with tips!

2012 NRL Preview - Round 10

Brisbane Broncos v Manly Sea Eagles
Suncorp Stadium, Friday 7.00pm

This round is always a cracker, with a double header featured at Suncorp Stadium. The first game on the menu sees the highflying Broncos taking on defending premiers the Sea Eagles.

The Broncos are sitting in second place on the ladder, and although they come into this game after a loss last round, they have generally impressed this year. Their young blokes have really fired this year, and although they come into this game missing Peter Wallace, and with Justin Hodges suffering a mild injury at training during the week, they will fancy their chances here at home.

The Sea Eagles last week narrowly got up over the Canberra Raiders. It was a solid performance, but not the awe-inspiring feats of seasons gone by. They will need to continue their recent improvement if they want to knock the Broncos off.  They will also miss the services of Foran once again, he failed a late fitness test on his dodgy hamstring. While his brother has proved an able replacement, particularly with his big hits in defence, he doesn’t have the same flair in attack. This may just tip the scales in favour of the Broncos.

All in all, this should be a cracking game, in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium. Both teams have big match experience, and I think this one will go down to the wire, with the Broncos getting up in a close one.

Sports Banter Tip – Broncos

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs v Gold Coast Titans
Suncorp Stadium, Friday 8.45pm

Round 2 in the Friday night double header at Suncorp sees the Bulldogs taking their home game north, up against the Gold Coast Titans.

Des Hasler’s Bulldogs have had a solid start to the season, sitting 5th on the table with 5 wins and 4 losses. One of those wins came last week, when the Bulldogs trounced the Eels. The game started out looking as if the Eels had turned up to play, but in the 10 minutes either side of half time, the doggies put the Eels to the sword, and scored 42 unanswered points.

The Titans are having another year to forget, languishing towards the bottom of the table. In saying that though, they were very unlucky last week against the Tigers, with the Wests boys coming away with one of their trademarks wins against the grain.

Somehow, I don’t think the Titans have another game like that in them this week, and I think the Bulldogs will be way too strong. 13+ on the dogs will be where the smart money is.

Sports Banter Tip – Bulldogs

New Zealand Warriors v Sydney Roosters
Mt Smart
Stadium, Saturday 5.30pm

With a few byes this weekend, there are only two games on Super Saturday, with the first kicking off in New Zealand, the Warriors taking on the Sydney Roosters.

The Warriors scored a good win last week over the Brisbane Broncos, who are sitting high on the NRL Ladder. They’ll be keen to build on that momentum this week against the chooks. I love watching the Warriors play, you never know what you are going to get. They have so many exciting players all over the park, including Maloney and Johnson in the halves.

Maloney will also be playing his new club, and I’m sure he’ll be keen to put on a good show to impress his future team mates and coach.

The Roosters last week scored a good win over the Knights. After a stack of possession early in the game without points, the flood gates opened in the second half. The chooks have been a bit of surprise packet this year, with such a young squad I thought this might be a consolidation year for them, before giving finals football a full crack next year. However they have got the points on the board, and are sitting in the 8. Consistancy though is still a problem, and Brian Smith has no tougher challenge here than a NZ trip to test that out.

Mitchell Pearce will be one player to keep an eye on – he has been hitting good form leading up to Origin, and will be keen to put the final stamp on his selection for this years series.

The Roosters don’t have a particularly good record travelling to NZ however, and with this in mind, I can’t go past the Warriors. It’ll definitely be a high scoring affair, so get on the overs if you can, otherwise the Kiwi’s are specials for a 13+ win.

Sports Banter Tip – Warriors

Newcastle Knights v North Queensland Cowboys
Hunter
Stadium, Saturday 7.30pm

Game two on Saturday comes to us from Hunter Stadium, with the Newcastle Knights taking on the North Queensland Cowboys.

The 2012 season for the Knights has not gone to expectation, with the side struggling and failing to make an impact in the premiership. Coach Wayne Bennett does not yet have the squad he wants up there, and with a few injuries in crucial positions, this is a danger period in the season for them. They need some wins on the board, otherwise they may as well book the end of season trip.

The loss of Gidley and Buderus is a big blow, and with Darius Boyd crying his way through the season at fullback, the pressure falls on Mullen to take control of the team. Their forward pack has also struggled, and you need look no further than last week’s loss to the Roosters as proof of that. New signing Willie Mason was meant to add a bit of muscle, but after having his lights punched twice by Boyd Cordner, you can see there is still a bit of rust in the old boys legs.

The Cowboys have been in red hot form lately, with their attack clicking into gear, and their big men hitting hard. Matt Bowen looks to be playing as well as he ever has, and Thurston is his usual self, although his goal kicking boots must have some lead weights in them. Thurston is under a bit of an injury cloud however, and that could skew this game if he is out.

An area of strength for the Cows this year has been their roll forward – their forwards are making good metres and are getting fast play-the-balls. This allows Thurston and the like time and space to run amok.

The Cowboys will be too strong in this one I think, although I think the Knights will come out firing early. Get on the Knights/Cowboys half-time/full-time double for some value.

Sports Banter Tip – Cowboys

Canberra Raiders v Parramatta Eels
Canberra
Stadium, Sunday 2.00pm

This match-up looms as do-or-die for both clubs if finals football is on the agenda. The Eels sit in last place after 9 rounds, and although the Raiders have flirted with the Top 8 at various stages, three losses in a row means that a win is now essential to stay in touch with the pack.

Although they suffered an unlucky loss against the Sea Eagles last week, the Green Machine looked good for the majority of the match. The Eels are in crisis, but have played better recently, a win here is a must for the club as they look to rebuild from a horror start to 2012.

The Raiders are about as close to full strength as they can get with the return of Bronson Harrison from injury. The promising comebacks of Josh Dugan and Shaun Fensom have added plenty of spark in attack and defence, as the Canberra men look to bounce back in front of their home fans.

The Eels welcome Chris Sandow back into the starting side as they look for some more punch in their attacking raids. If the unpredictable halfback can combine well with Jarryd Hayne, it could spell trouble for the Raiders who have struggled against teams going wide.

How Hayne performs in this clash will go a long way in determining the Eels chances. There’s no doubt the fullback can win games on his own, and with many experts leaving him out of their possible Origin squads, he’s going to have a lot to prove on Sunday.

In other Eels news, live-wire Ben Roberts has been dropped with Casey McGuire moving to five-eighth. Cheyse Blair will also shift to the centres from the wing to cover for the injured Willie Tonga.

This match is the Raiders to lose, they should be too strong going off their performance last week, but never discount the Eels, they’ve got plenty of upset victories in them this year.

Sports Banter Tip – Raiders

Cronulla Sharks v Melbourne Storm
Toyota
Stadium, Sunday 3.00pm

This is the clash that all NRL fans have been looking forward to. Both sides have been excellent this year, and many feel that the Cronulla men are the only team that can bother the undefeated Storm.

It has been a terrific start thus far for the Sharkies, but after a surprise 34-28 loss to the Rabbitohs last week, they will be out for redemption against a Storm side that has destroyed everything in its path.

In fantastic news for Cronulla and NSW, captain Paul Gallen has been cleared of a dangerous contact charge and a serious knee injury. Gallen picked up the injury against Souths last weekend, and whist he’s not a certain starter against the Storm, it will take a lot to keep the superstar from playing this key game in some way, shape or form.

The Storm have named the same side that pummelled the Panthers last week, and with the likes of Cronk, Slater and and Smith all at the top of their game, the Sharks will need to be at their best to come close to the competition heavyweights.

The Storm have shown a tendency to throw the ball wide early in recent weeks, scoring plenty of tries from within their own half. With speed to burn out wide, any defensive lapse will cost the Sharks dearly.

This is certainly the match to watch in Round 10. Both sides will come out firing, and with the Sharks determined to be the first to knock the Storm over this season – expect an early taste of the Origin vibe on Sunday afternoon.

2012 NRL Teams Round 10

Round 10 of the NRL kicks off on Friday night and we’ve got all of the NRL teams as they are released by the clubs. This weekend we saw a number of injuries again, most notably to Peter Wallace (Broncos) and Paul Gallen (Sharks). Both will more than likely miss this weekends fixtures, and could miss more should their injuries prove to be more serious than first thought. A big blow to two sides looking to consolidate a top 4 spot over the next few weeks.

Check out the Round 10 NRL teams below to see who your side has named for the weekend, we’ll keep this updated as more news comes from the clubs throughout the week as well.

2012 NRL Review – Round 9

Cowboys v Dragons – 2012 NRL Round 9

Plenty of controversy in this one with Dragons backrower Matt Prior sent off for a sickening elbow to the head of Jonathan Thurston. The Cowboys playmaker looked to be in trouble but managed to get to his feet and after some treatment he was given the all clear, a sign of relief to Queensland fans around the country! He didn’t return to the match though.

The match itself was over by halftime with the Cowboys going into the break up by 22 points, the Dragons put up a fight in the second with an early try to Brett Morris before Matt Prior’s brain explosion. The Dragons were the better side in the last 25 minutes despite being a man down, showing just how much influence Thurston has on this Cowboys team.

The Cowboys take on a struggling Knights outfit at Hunter Stadium while the Dragons will be looking to bounce back against an even worse Panthers side at Centrebet Stadium on Monday night.

Eels v Bulldogs – 2012 NRL Round 9

The Eels went from bad to worse on Friday night, giving up a 12-4 lead after half an hour to concede 42 unanswered points in a 46-12 hiding by the Bulldogs. It appears the Eels have absolutely no bottle at the moment, one mistake by Mitchell Allgood and the Bulldogs piled on 3 late tries in the first half to go to the break 22-12 up.

This loss to the Bulldogs now means that the Eels have had their worst start to a season in 52 years, considering the offseason purchases they made, surely Kearney’s position is now under a real threat! He looks bereft of ideas and I can’t see how he is going to pick this team up, it may already be time to start looking at rebuilding for next season even at this early stage of season 2012.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Eels as they travel to the Nation’s Capital to take on a Canberra side desparate for a win. The Bulldogs host the Titans at Homebush with Jamal Idris returning home for the first time since his offseason move north.

Warriors v Broncos – 2012 NRL Round 9

This was a cracker of a match that showed just why the Warriors were early season favourites after making last season’s grand final. The Broncos had won their last 7 matches prior to this one and were looking good to make it 8. The Warriors of the back end of last season turned up though and a flurry of tries just before half time took them into the break leading 24-10.

The Broncos never really recovered and their night got worse when Peter Wallace suffered a recurrence of the groin injury that had him missing a couple of weeks back. While the Broncos put on a try to get the scores a bit more respectable, the Warriors never really looked like losing and wrapped it up with a try to Blues hopeful Feleti Mateo close to the end. Sam Thaiday scored a late consolation try on the final siren but the Warriors prevailed 30-20 in a match full of attacking football.

The Warriors stay at home and take on the Roosters in a rematch of their round 5 clash, they’ll be looking for revenge. The Broncos take on a rejuventated Sea Eagles side at Suncorp on Friday night.

Titans v Tigers – 2012 NRL Round 9

How on earth did the Tigers win this one, much like the one they lost against the Rabbitohs earlier in the season, the Tigers looked dead and buried. They were down 14-0 just before halftime, a Benji Marshall try sending the Tigers into the sheds with a bit of belief it seems.

The Tigers managed one more through Blake Ayshford after the restart, and the scores remained at 14-12 to the Titans right up until the final minute. Robbie Farah was taken without the ball as the Tigers made one last attempt at a try, Phil Graham sin binned for a professional foul and Benji Marshall slotting the penalty over to send it to golden point.

It didn’t take long either, Jordan Ranking dropping the ball cold on the Titans 40m line in just the first set of six. The Tigers worked their way up to the Titans 10m line for the subsequent scrum and sent the ball back on the 4th tackle for Robbie Farah to slot the field goal and win the game. Surely after this performance he is now a step closer to the Blues Origin spot he deserves.

Panthers v Storm – 2012 NRL Round 9

Once again the Storm showed their class in this one, the Panthers were looking good in the opening 20 minutes, going to an early 10-6 lead through winger Etu Uaisele. That didn’t last long though as the Storm piled on 3 unanswered tries, like the Bulldogs, to take a 22-10 lead into the break. Storm winger Justin O’Neill scored a break away try 10 minutes into the second half and another with 9 minutes to go to complete a hat trick of tries.

The Storm scored 38 unanswered points in the last 55 minutes of the match to blitz the Panthers 44-10 and heap more pressure on Ivan Cleary. He can be thankful for the fact that the Eels have been even more woeful and it appears that Stephen Kearney is under more pressure in the media.

The Panthers have another tough match against a Dragons side looking for a win next Monday night, while the Storm travel to Toyota Stadium to tackle a red hot Sharks outfit next Sunday.

Sea Eagles v Raiders – 2012 NRL Round 9

Raiders coach David Furner was understandably left fuming after this match with an 8-3 penalty count going against his side. The Raiders didn’t appear to be much worse than the Sea Eagles in terms of discipline and were handed some very harsh calls during the afternoon.

Brett Stewart put his hand up for the Blues fullback role with an outstanding defensive display, he saved no less than 3 tries for the Sea Eagles in this one. In a tight match, that’s just what you want from your No. 1. How he stopped man mountain Learoyd-Lahrs close to the line I will never know.

The Sea Eagles defended their way to a win in this one, the Raiders just could not make their chances pay and in the end a breakaway try to Jamie Lyon after a Steve Matai bust got the Sea Eagles the 2 points in an 18-12 win.

Roosters v Knights – 2012 NRL Round 9

If Mitchell Pearce hadn’t already claimed the Blues No. 7 after some of his recent performances he has now. An outstanding performance from the Roosters halfback as he tore apart the lacklustre Knights at will, setting up 2 tries and scoring one in the Roosters 24-6 win over Newcastle.

The Knights headed into this one in what could only be described as dubious form, and it showed here against a Roosters outfit that were looking to bounce back after their ANZAC day heartbreak.

The match started with a tense opening 20 minutes where neither side could capitalise on field position. In fact it took half an hour for the scores to be opened with Jarrod Mullen scoring for the Knights. That’s where it ended for them though, the Roosters piling on 4 unanswered tries, 3 in the second half. Mitchell Pearce capped off a fine afternoon getting on the end of a Jake Friend break with 8 minutes left to secure the win for the Roosters.

While Pearce has all but wrapped up the No. 7 jersey for NSW, Anthony Minichiello also staked a claim for the Fullback spot with another solid display, with Dugan and Stewart in fine form though he might find it tough.

Rabbitohs v Sharks – 2012 NRL Round 9

A sensational hat trick from Greg Inglis halted the Sharks winning streak and would have given Blues coach Ricky Stuart nightmares. Add to that the knee injury to Paul Gallen, he’ll have scans today, and it doesn’t bode well for NSW with the Origin opener just a couple of weeks away. Gallen was also put on report for an alleged knee on Dave Taylor but it didn’t really look like there was much in it and it’s the knee that looks most troubling as a Blues supporter.

Todd Carney showed why he is the favourite for the Blues No. 6 with a blistering performance, however it wasn’t enough to stop a rampant Rabbitohs side securing their 5th win of the season. Carney set up 3 tries and scored one from a scrum set play to all but guarantee he’ll be lining up alongside Pearce as the Blues halves pairing.

The win moves the Rabbitohs into the top 8 and was set up by the best performance Inglis has had in a Rabbitohs jersey in the season and a half he has been there. Inglis opened the scoring in the 4th minute followed by a Nathan Merritt special before Inglis grabbed a brace in the first half. Todd Carney and Jeff Robson got themselves on the scoresheet in the first half to take the match into the sheds at 18-12.

After the restart Stewart Mills got the Sharks back into the match but Carney failed to convert, the Rabbitohs then piled on two tries through Inglis and Merritt once again to take the Rabbitohs out to a 32-16 lead.

The Sharks hit back with tries from Colin Best and Ben Pomeroy however it wasn’t enough to get the Sharks over the line, in the end Reynolds boot getting the Rabbitohs home with 2 penalties and no missed conversions.
