Channel 9 NRL – Looking to Screw Over Viewers Once Again!

Channel 9′s latest bid to control the NRL has not gone unnoticed with numerous media outlets reporting on their latest plans today. The newest development is that Channel 9 would like the NRL to include stoppages to allow them to show more ads during the coverage. Channel 9 NRL coverage is bad at the best of times.

Channel 9 NRL Fail

Is this some kind of sick joke though??? Are the NRL actually going to give in to these demands when there are at least 2 other serious bidders in the mix? Surely they need to grow some balls and entertain the thought of the NRL TV rights going to a station that will treat the game with a bit of respect!

How many times have we seen Channel 9 treat NRL fans with contempt in just the past season alone?

This season, they refused to show the ANZAC Test live despite a public outcry and common sense did not prevail. 2 days later they couldn’t even show the City v Country game live despite the match being on in a reasonable time slot, we couldn’t have the match coverage finishing before Channel 9 news though could we!

To be honest I prefer to watch NRL on Fox Sports due to the HD coverage and no ads during play, not everyone has this option though and they’re stuck watching substandard coverage that the station can’t even be arsed to show live. Surely in this day and age we can expect better, HD is widely available in most households these days and people want to see their sport live. Times have changed and Channel 9 really need to get out of the dark ages and get with them!

The latest attempt by Channel 9 to control the sport we love is absurd. An extra 2 minutes at half time to ensure more ads can be screened, 30 second breaks for all scrum stoppages? It doesn’t end there either, 30 breaks for line drop-outs and between conversions and restarts. They’ve tried to soften the blow of this by announcing that they want to have live NRL on Thursday nights, 4 times.

Channel 9 are playing us for fools once again and it’s about time that the NRL stands up for itself and stops letting the network control it. There are plenty of interested parties out there that are willing to stump up big bucks for the coverage, the ARLC have all the leverage and it’s about time they use it and make improvements to the game, not send it backwards!

To me this reeks of a bit of collusion as well. Channel 9 and the NRL have reportedly been planning and working together for the last few months to make this happen. I doubt very much if any of the other interested parties were made party to these discussions either. So to me it sounds like we are going to be stuck with another 5 years of Channel 9 NRL coverage and the NRL look to be giving in without a fight. Sure Channel 9 are entitled to have first crack at a bid for the new rights but that should not entitle them to make changes to the way the game is played, that should be up to the NRL alone and TV advertising should be the last thing on their minds!

What are your thoughts on the latest developments, do you agree that Channel 9 NRL coverage is substandard, or do you think Channel 9 are the best network for the NRL?

NRL Draw Released – 2012 Season – Rounds 1-5

Today the NRL draw has been released for the first 5 matches of the upcoming 2012 NRL season. This includes venues, times, television coverage and even Twitter hashtags.

One thing that I noticed looking at this NRL draw is the amount of FTA coverage once again afforded to the Broncos, they have FTA games 5 out of the first 5 rounds. I know Channel 9 are trying to ensure that one FTA Friday game per week goes live into Queensland, but surely the Cowboys and Titans should get more of a share of the pie?

The Knights with Wayne Bennett and Darius Boyd on board look to have taken the Dragons share of FTA matches with 4 of their first 5 matches being shown on Channel 9.

Traditional FTA teams such as the Roosters and Bulldogs only have the 1 match on Channel 9, whereas the Sharks & Raiders have once again been completely ignored.

We can only hope once the independent commission actually comes into force that the spread of FTA games will be more even, we may have to wait until 2013 to see any benefits of this though with the impending TV rights deal.

The NRL and Channel 9 really need to get their act together and stop robbing the fans of seeing their favourite teams on free to air television. It isn’t long now until the Independent commission is installed and TV rights are up for grabs and you would think that the NRL draw would reflect the closeness of the competition. This isn’t the case and it will be interesting to see whether there is any backlash from the fans in the first 5 weeks of the competition in terms of ratings.

Let us know your thoughts on the scheduling for the first 5 games and the NRL draw in general in the comments section below, or hit us up in the forum!

Channel 9 – It’s time for Rugby League to Find a New Home!

Channel 9 have really started to lose the plot when it comes to coverage of Rugby League in this country, the last straw in an endless list of wrongdoings coming on Wednesday night when they shamelessly promoted Sonny Bill Williams at halftime during Rugby League’s showpiece event, the State of Origin.

They say Sonny Bill Williams was interviewed at halftime because Channel 9 also holds the free to air rights for this years Rugby World Cup, the problem is that the country tuned in to see Rugby League’s elite doing battle in what was Darren Lockyer’s farewell match and for Channel 9 to disrepect the code like this suggests they no longer deserve to hold the rights to the country’s number one code, Rugby League.

At the conclusion of the Origin match, watched by record numbers around the country, Channel 9 also aired a promo piece on the World Cup, they really have no shame. Cross promoting two codes that have been doing battle for as long as I can remember is just not on, it would be like advertising the GWS franchise during a Parramatta match.

Friday night NRL has been a joke for years now too, It’s nice to have a live game on a Friday night, but the second game is really just an afterthought. We get that game delayed from 9.30pm and it’s riddled with ads, I can’t be arsed to sit through all the ads and by the time the game starts I already know the result anyway. I’d much rather just watch it the next day or later that night on Fox Sports and avoid the ads, at least I’d get to see it in HD as well, which brings me onto my next gripe.

No NRL, State of Origin or Test Matches are being broadcast in High Definition or 3D this year and it really should be the last straw in a long list of disrespectful acts towards a code that they have been broadcasting for over 20 years.

How hard is it to broadcast the NRL in HD in this day and age, and why did they decide to make Gem their HD channel rather than their flagship channel, you know, the one with all of the sports coverage? They must think we are a bunch of mugs and I for one cannot wait until the next rights deal is up for grabs in 2013, if only it was sooner!

To add insult to injury, in April Channel 9 decided to go with the Royal wedding on their main channel instead of live Rugby League action. What a joke, considering they had promised that the wedding would be broadcast on Gem, and they go and delay the NRL by an hour. So we missed out on any live football that Friday night altogether.

City v Country was billed as the most important Origin selection trial in years, for once it actually meant something with a number of spots up for grabs in the NSW Origin side. What do Channel 9 do, they show it delayed after the “ANZAC” Test Match, which incidentally was held almost 2 weeks after ANZAC day, most probably to accomodate the Royal Wedding from the week before. A pointless mid season test match that should be held after State of Origin, if not limited to the end of the season.

Given the chance to show two live games on a Friday night, you would have thought that Channel 9 would have jumped at the chance. A few weeks ago the Rabbitohs took one of their home games over to Perth, the game could have started at 7.30pm in Perth for a 9.30pm broadcast time in the eastern states. But, you guessed it, Channel 9 stuffed that up as well, with the game kicking off at 7pm in Perth, and the broadcast not starting until 9.30pm on Channel 9, half an hour after the actual game started. By the end of the match, with an extra half an hour of ads thrown in, the game finished an hour after it had actually started. Massive oversight by a broadcaster that is clearly not in touch with it’s key demographic, rugby league fans.

To be honest if these actions had been from another broadcaster, we would have seen the Phil Gould’s and Danny Weidler’s all over it, no coincidence who pays their massive paychecks is there!
