10 Worst Sporting Moments of 2011

As promised, here is our view of the worst sporting moments of 2011. There were plenty of scandals, disgraceful acts, poor team and individual performances and even a failed TV attempt in 2011. We sifted through the wreckage and picked our top 10 worst sporting moments of 2011, enjoy!

10. Shane Warne’s Failed Attempt at his own Talk Show

Shane Warne is unanimously known as the greatest bowler Australia has ever seen, he has taken 708 test wickets and over 1,000 international wickets but his career also included plenty of scandal which detracted away from his performances on the pitch. The latest of Warnie’s failures was his attempt at a self titled talk show during the summer of Cricket.

After many weeks of hype and countless advertisements of the show, the ratings nosedived and it only lasted 5 weeks before it was pulled from our screens never to be seen again. I think Warnie needs to stick to commentary and the occasional playing comeback!

9. Simon Katich Axed from the Australian Cricket Team

Simon Katich was unceremoniously dumped from the Australian Test Cricket side after a few poor performances, fair enough, but the fact that he was also not included in the list of 25 players contracted to Cricket Australia was an absolute disgrace. We’ve covered the interview he gave in June here http://sportsbanter.com.au/the-simon-katich-press-conference-brilliant/ and what a press conference that was.

Katich rightfully had a go at the selectors in regards to their ridiculous decision and it was great entertainment, he should never have been dropped from the test squad let alone the 25 man list of contracted players. A disgraceful decision and Australia have been paying for it ever since!

8. Ricky Nixon and the St Kilda School Girl Scandal

It all started out seemingly like a schoolgirl who had been embarrassed by a bunch of footballers and wanted to get her own back by releasing pictures that she had of some of those said players, however it soon turned more scandalous. It was revealed that Ricky Nixon, a player agent, had had an affair with the schoolgirl and when this became public the media could not get enough of it.

While the truth eventually came out, the girl admitted on National television that everything she had said was a lie, it didn’t take away any of the embarrassment that was left at the St Kilda Football Club or Ricky Nixon himself.

7. Quade Cooper’s Poor 2011 Rugby World Cup Performances

Quade Cooper was supposed to be the next big thing in Australian Sport, a fantastic Rugby player who was being coveted by a host of Rugby League clubs to switch codes with some staggeringly large offers rumoured to have been offered. After his shocking Rugby World Cup performances most of those offers were off the table and Quade was left with slim pickings in terms of clubs to choose from.

Things went from bad to worse for Quade as he ended up injuring his knee in the 3rd place play-off match against Wales. The injury is expected to keep him out of action for another few months and he may miss the start of the 2012 Super Rugby competition as a result.

6. Pakistan Cricketers Disgraceful Match Fixing – Bans and Subsequent Jailings

In February this year, the deliberate no-ball allegations against 3 of Pakistan’s star cricketers resulted in 5 year bans for all three players being dished out, soft if you ask me. Criminal proceedings were launched against all three players and in November this year all three players were found guilty and were sentenced to prison time. Salman Butt received 30 months, Mohammed Asif 12 months and youngster Mohammed Amir 6 months.

The fact that the players only received 5 year bans is disgraceful in my book, especially in the case of Amir who would still only be 24 after his ban expires. All of these players should have been given life bans for bringing the game into disrepute!

5. Australia’s Capitulation at the Wanderers – All Out for 47!

Australian Cricket reached a new low in November when they were embarrassingly bowled out for 47 against South Africa in the First Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. At one point Australia were 9-21 and it was left up to tail-enders Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon to ensure that Australia were not bowled out for the lowest score in test cricket history, the 26 scored by New Zealand in 1955.

One thing that the embarrassing result highlighted was that Australia is indeed in a rebuilding phase at the moment, something that really should have been done prior to the exodus of 2006-2008 when we lost Warne, McGrath, Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist and a host of other experienced players all in a short period.

4. Qatar Being Handed the 2022 World Cup by FIFA

One of the most disgraceful decisions of 2011 was FIFA awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. The only reason Qatar was chosen was money, and there are still investigations underway in relation to potential bribery allegations against the Qatari administration. Some say this decision was a result of Sepp Blatter wanting to leave a legacy seeing as he won’t be FIFA President forever, but I can only see one reason for this decision….$$$.

The fact that Qatar has no infrastructure, 50 Degree Celcius heat and is considered to be an unsafe place for players and fans alike, should have been enough for FIFA to overlook them, however obviously money overruled common sense on this occasion. It will be interesting to see what comes of the bribery allegations and whether Qatar is ultimately stripped of the hosting rights to the World Cup.

3. New South Wales Blues Losing Six Straight State of Origin Series

As promised, this one makes both lists. As a proud New South Welshman I was devastated when we lost the series earlier this year. It was inevitable with the imminent retirement of Darren Lockyer but that didn’t help soften the blow one bit. NSW have been going through somewhat of a rebuilding period and with Ricky Stuart back in the fold the passion returned and NSW really look to be heading in the right direction.

Queenslanders have shown throughout the last 6 years that they are arrogant and have short memories. Just six years ago Mal Meninga was on the verge of being sacked and the State of Queensland was over Origin football. Turn the clock forward 6 years and Queenslanders have the nerve to accuse New South Welshman of being sore losers, the difference is that we haven’t given up on our team and will be there supporting them again in 2012!

2. Australia Fails to Win Back the Ashes on Home Soil

In January this year, Australia suffered their most embarrassing series defeat since I have followed Cricket, over 20 years, by losing to England in the Ashes on home soil. In the end Australia lost the series 3-1, that’s bad enough but what makes it even harder to take is that all 3 of those defeats were by an innings. We were absolutely carved up and none of our bowlers came away from that series with any credibility.

It was that defeat at the hands of England that got the ball rolling on the rebuilding of Australian Cricket. First the selectors were dumped, Ricky Ponting was replaced by Michael Clarke, a new generation of young stars were uncovered and hopefully by 2013 we will be ready to take back the Urn that rightfully belongs in Australia!

1. Manly Win the 2011 NRL Premiership…. Then Self Implode!

Is there anybody out there, apart from Manly fans, that actually wanted this mob to win this years NRL Premiership? I didn’t think so. The Manly Sea Eagles are the team that everybody loves to hate, and moreso when they are actually winning things. It all started back in the 80′s when there was no salary cap and the Silvertails bought there way to several premierships. People haven’t forgotten that, me included, and when they won this years Premiership I thought here we go again.

Just as I was dreading another Sea Eagles dynasty, the board decides to self implode and the club falls to pieces. Out goes Premiership winning coach Des Hasler to the Bulldogs, and a host of players not happy with the decision considering their own futures. Only the Sea Eagles could manage to turn a Premiership win into post season controversy, couldn’t happen to a nicer club!

So there you have it, our take on the Worst Sporting Moments of 2011. Let us know if you agree or disagree with our selections in the comments section, and be sure to let us know what you think should be in the list.

Steve’s Sportingbet Multi of the Week – 11 November 2011

Last week we missed out by a whisker again, Jimmy Choux let us down initially by finishing 4th when it really should have a at least come a place. To top it off, Liverpool somehow managed to conjure up a draw against a promoted Swansea side at Anfield, how they didn’t win that match is anyone’s guess.

Anyway, this week we have another one of those silly international breaks so we’ve gone for a mix of A-League action, Abu Dhabi Formula One, Four Nations Rugby League, and supplemented those with a few specials from the international football stage, including Oman v the Socceroos tonight.

Hopefully we’ll have a bit more luck this week, surely placing the bet at 11.11 on the 11/11/11 should do the trick :P

Ballon d’Or – FIFA World Player of the Year Shortlist 2011

The shortlist for the 2011 FIFA World Player of the Year has just been released and although there are some quality players among the nominees, one notable omission caught my attention, here is the list in full:

Eric Abidal (France)
Sergio Aguero (Argentina)
Karim Benzema (France)
Iker Casillas (Spain)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Dani Alves (Brazil)
Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon)
Cesc Fabregas (Spain)
Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
Andres Iniesta (Spain)
Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Thomas Muller (Germany)
Nani (Portugal)
Neymar (Brazil)
Mesut Oezil (Germany)
Gerard Pique (Spain)
Wayne Rooney (England)
Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany)
Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)
Luis Suarez (Uruguay)
David Villa (Spain)
Xabi Alonso (Spain)
Xavi (Spain)

As you can see, there are some quality players there. My gripe is that there is one player that has been omitted from this list who on form over the last 12 months should have been one of the first picked. That man is Robin van Persie, he has been left off the shortlist despite scoring 38 goals so far this calendar year, only rivalled by Messi and Ronaldo.

This goal scoring stat alone makes him one of, if not the best striker in the world in 2011. One of the players included at his expense is the Brazilian youngster Neymar, the kid has potential but could you honestly say he is FIFA Player of the Year material yet?

Another player included in this final list is Luis Suarez, sure he has been great for Liverpool in the last 10 months since moving from Ajax, but his stats hardly stack up against RVP’s over the last 12 months, even at Ajax he only scored 12 goals in the 2010/11 season and just the 4 goals for Liverpool to end that season. He’s scored 7 goals so far this season in all competitions. I wouldn’t call that FIFA World Player of the Year quality.

It seems there is a bit of a conspiracy against English clubs when it comes to FIFA, if you take a look at the list, only 3 of the players play for English clubs and 2 of them would have been judged partly on their form for other clubs earlier in the year, namely Suarez as mentioned above, and Sergio Aguero who moved to Manchester City from Spanish club Athletico Madrid just a few months ago. The only genuine English player on that list is Wayne Rooney. Now considering that the Premier League is widely considered the best League in the world, how is it that only one player from the League can be nominated for FIFA World Player of the Year?

One question I have is would Cesc Fabregas have been included in that squad had he remained at Arsenal instead of moving to Barcelona in the off season? I would expect that answer would be no and the only reason he has been included is because he now plays for FIFA’s favourite club, Barcelona.

FIFA really need to get their act together and start picking the Ballon d’Or shortlist based on form, not based on their favourite players and clubs like they currently do!

Steve’s Sportingbet Multi of the Week – 8 October 2011

After a poor couple of weeks and an international break for all the major European football leagues this weekend, I thought going conservative might be the order of the day to try and get my account balance back to where it was before the luck disappeared.

This week I’ve gone for a number of international friendlies and qualifiers, along with New Zealand to win well against Argentina in the World Cup quarter finals, total payout for this week is $12.56.

Good luck.

English Premier League – Week 3 Preview

Week 3 of the English Premier League kicks off tonight but it will be two match ups on Sunday that will no doubt grab most of the media attention. First up on Sunday night, Tottenham take on a cashed up Manchester City side that just replaced them in this seasons Champions League. Both clubs have just this week made a high profile signing with Tottenham snapping up former Arsenal striker Adebayor on loan from Man City, and Man City spent £25m on Samir Nasri from Arsenal after they gave up on trying to keep him.

In the other match, Manchester United host an Arsenal side that just qualified for the group stages of the Champions League mid-week, and as mentioned above, just lost one of their best players to a close rival. After this weekend we have to endure the customary international week which means no club football next weekend! The sooner FIFA look at the scheduling of international friendlies so close to the start of the season the better.

Saturday’s matches

Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Aston Villa strikers Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey have been declared fit. The duo have recovered from hamstring and groin injuries respectively which saw them substituted during last weekend’s 3-1 win home success over Blackburn. Chris Herd is favourite to replace Luke Young at right-back. Young is having talks with QPR after the clubs agreed a fee but is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Mick McCarthy is poised to name an unchanged side for the third successive match. McCarthy will have to make a change on the bench, though, after striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake suffered medial ligament damage during the midweek Carling Cup tie at Northampton. Sam Vokes is the likely candidate to step up and provide cover for the Kevin Doyle-Steven Fletcher forward partnership as Wolves aim to maintain their 100% start to the campaign.

Aston Villa: $1.95
Draw: $3.30
Wolverhampton: $3.90

Wigan v Queens Park Rangers

Wigan will be without defensive duo Steve Gohouri and Antolin Alcaraz. Gohouri is still missing with a calf problem and will not be back for at least two weeks while Alcaraz, who was replaced during the goalless draw at Swansea, suffered a muscle tear in his leg and could be absent for around two months. Hugo Rodallega has yet to start a Premier League game after featuring for Colombia in the Copa America but he has appeared from the bench in the previous two matches and is in contention to start this weekend. Victor Moses is rated at 50/50 after also suffering a knock at Swansea and although his injury is not as bad as first feared he has not trained with the first team for the majority of the week.

QPR duo Jay Bothroyd and DJ Campbell are set to return. The strikers missed out on a starting spot in last weekend’s 1-0 victory at Everton with a virus, which manager Neil Warnock admits is now affecting some of his other players. Warnock will be without Clint Hill (suspension), Kieron Dyer (foot), Jamie Mackie (leg) and Rob Hulse (knee) on Saturday, while Bradley Orr will be handed a late fitness test after limping out of the midweek Carling Cup defeat to Rochdale.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Wigan

Sportingbet Odds
Wigan: $2.35
Draw: $3.25
Queens Park: $3.05

Blackburn v Everton

Blackburn boss Steve Kean is expecting to have skipper Christopher Samba available for the first time. The central defender has missed the start of the campaign with a groin injury, but is likely to be included after getting a full week of training under his belt. Ryan Nelsen will undergo a late fitness test on a knee problem, although Grant Hanley is fit after receiving a blow to the head in Wednesday night’s Carling Cup victory over Sheffield Wednesday, and Brett Emerton could play his final game for the club before joining Sydney FC.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov is back in the Everton squad having completed his suspension. Tim Cahill and Jermaine Beckford could feature after missing the midweek Carling Cup victory over Sheffield United due to sickness and a knee problem respectively. Seamus Coleman (ankle) and Magaye Gueye (broken toe) remain sidelined and will not take part in this match.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Everton

Sportingbet Odds
Blackburn: $3.15
Draw: $3.25
Everton: $2.25

Chelsea v Norwich

Juan Mata is unlikely to start but the Spain winger, who completed his move from Valencia on Wednesday, could be on the bench at Stamford Bridge. Fellow new boy Oriol Romeu is in contention to start, but the game comes slightly too soon for David Luiz (thigh), while Petr Cech and Michael Essien (both knee) remain sidelined and Daniel Sturridge serves the final instalment of his three-match ban.

Norwich will be without defender Daniel Ayala, set to miss up to eight weeks with a knee injury. Playmaker Wes Hoolahan (hamstring) will be monitored, centre-back Leon Barnett returns after a one-match ban, as manager Paul Lambert is set to make changes from the side thrashed 4-0 at home in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night. Striker James Vaughan and centre-half Elliott Ward are still sidelined after picking up minor knee injuries during pre-season.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Chelsea

Sportingbet Odds
Chelsea: $1.20
Draw: $6.00
Norwich: $13.00

Swansea v Sunderland

Garry Monk and Ferrie Bodde are the only absentees for Swansea in this match, Monk is once again ruled out by an ongoing foot problem, although he played for the reserves on Thursday night, while midfielder Bodde has had treatment in Holland after suffering a niggle in his recovery from his most recent knee injury. Rodgers is expected to stick with the majority of the side that drew with Wigan last weekend after being unimpressed by the performance of those given a chance in the shock Carling Cup defeat at Shrewsbury.

Summer signing John O’Shea will make his competitive debut. The former Manchester United defender has finally shaken off the hamstring injury which has sidelined him for five weeks and manager Steve Bruce has indicated he will play at the Liberty Stadium as the Black Cats attempt to secure a first victory of the Barclays Premier League season. Bruce faces a decision over his goalkeepers after replacing Simon Mignolet with Keiren Westwood for the Carling Cup defeat at Brighton in midweek, but Craig Gordon, Fraizer Campbell and David Meyler (all knee) are still sidelined.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Sunderland

Sportingbet Odds
Swansea: $2.40
Draw: $3.25
Sunderland: $2.90

Liverpool v Bolton

Liverpool will be without midfielder Raul Meireles after he suffered a collarbone injury in the Carling Cup victory at Exeter on Wednesday and manager Kenny Dalglish expects him to be sidelined for a few weeks. Dalglish will check on the condition of Glen Johnson (hamstring), while Steven Gerrard (groin) is still working his way back to fitness.

Marcos Alonso has become the latest Bolton defender to be hit by the club’s injury jinx. The former Real Madrid man faces eight to 12 weeks out after suffering a broken metatarsal in the Carling Cup victory over Macclesfield. He joins Tyrone Mears (broken leg), Sam Ricketts (Achilles) and Gretar Steinsson on the sidelines, although the Icelander could come into contention after suffering bruising to his foot against Manchester City. Tuncay Sanli will hope to retain his starting role after scoring on his debut against Macclesfield in midweek, but Ricardo Gardner may miss out again as he struggles to overcome a groin problem. It will also be interesting to see how Gary Cahill plays following rumours of a bid from Arsenal that was turned down overnight. It appears Bolton are prepared to let him go if he price is right though as they just acquired Boyata on loan from Manchester City for the season.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Liverpool

Sportingbet Odds
Liverpool: $1.38
Draw: $4.60
Bolton: $8.00

Sunday’s matches

Newcastle v Fulham

Joey Barton is unlikely to be included in the Newcastle squad as he considers his future. The 28-year-old has this week undergone a medical at QPR, but is yet to agree to join the promoted club, and manager Alan Pardew does not believe he would be in the right frame of mind to play. Central defender Mike Williamson is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in last night’s 2-1 Carling Cup victory at Scunthorpe, while keeper Steve Harper will miss out with a knee problem and striker Shola Ameobi could be limited by a hip injury.

Fulham pair Bobby Zamora and John Arne Riise are doubts. The England international striker missed last night’s Europa League play-off against Dnipro with an ankle injury and is rated 50-50 for the match at St James’ Park. Riise was forced off with a groin problem yesterday and has had a scan, while Simon Davies could face a further five months out with a knee injury.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Newcastle

Sportingbet Odds
Newcastle: $2.05
Draw: $3.30
Fulham: $3.60

Tottenham v Manchester City

Luka Modric looks set to make his first Tottenham appearance of the season. The wantaway Croatian has been carrying what has been officially diagnosed as a minor hamstring complaint but should be fit, along with Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton, who have recovered from recent Achilles and knee injuries respectively. William Gallas (calf), Steven Pienaar (groin), Ledley King, Wilson Palacios and Sandro (all knee) miss out while loan signing Emmanuel Adebayor is unavailable to play against his parent club.

New signing Samir Nasri could make his Manchester City debut. Midfielder Nigel de Jong is out with a foot problem but manager Roberto Mancini has no other injury concerns. Carlos Tevez could also feature but is again likely to be on the bench due to a lack of match sharpness. Manchester City now have a frightening attack when you take into account they also signed Sergio Aguero and have Edin Dzeko, David Silva, James Milner among a host of others to call upon.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Draw

Sportingbet Odds
Tottenham: $2.75
Draw: $3.35
Man City: $2.45

West Bromwich Albion v Stoke

West Brom coach Roy Hodgson is considering whether to give a first start of the season to striker Peter Odemwingie. Albion’s top scorer with 15 goals last term, he has recovered from an ankle injury. Midfielder Zoltan Gera is the only player currently sidelined as he builds up his fitness after ankle surgery.

Stoke have influential duo Robert Huth and Matthew Etherington back. The pair return to the Potters squad having both been suspended for the Europa League play-off victory over FC Thun. Manager Tony Pulis withdrew Jermaine Pennant in the second half of that game as a precaution and hopes the winger will be fit to face the Baggies, while Rory Delap will also be assessed for a hamstring problem.

sportsbanter.com.au Tip: Stoke

Sportingbet Odds
West Brom: $2.05
Draw: $3.30
Stoke: $3.60

Manchester United v Arsenal

Manchester United are hopeful that Rio Ferdinand will be fit to play following a hamstring injury. Darren Fletcher stepped up his comeback from a virus and played 90 minutes for the reserves, but Nemanja Vidic and Rafael da Silva are definitely out. This will see another patched up back line turning out for the Red Devils but Arsenal have plenty of personnel problems of their own.

Alex Song, Gervinho and Emmanuel Frimpong are suspended. Jack Wilshere saw a specialist today but the club are still waiting for an update on his ankle injury which is expected to keep him out for three more weeks. Nicklas Bendtner is sidelined with an ankle problem and Sebastien Squillaci is also out, along with Kieran Gibbs (hamstring) and Abou Diaby (ankle). Defender Thomas Vermaelen will have a fitness test tomorrow but is expected to be fit and Laurent Koscielny came through a similar check on his back problem this morning.

FIFA World Cup Voting Process a Disgrace!

FIFA have all but confirmed that the voting for the 2022 world Cup will be re-opened should allegations of corruption against two FIFA Executive Committee members prove to be true. The allegations are that these two members, from the Ivory Coast and Cameroon, each received 1.5 million pounds to vote for Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.

There are also allegations by former FA Chairman, Lord Triesman, that four FIFA Executive Committee members sought bribes to ensure they voted for England to host the 2018 World Cup, this eventually went to Russia so who is to say that they didn’t act on these bribes themselves, no evidence has come forward to suggest this so it’s purely speculation at this stage.

What this suggests to me is that the entire voting process for hosting of World Cups is a disgrace and needs to be overhauled. FIFA is obviously corrupt so it really should not be up to the 22 Executive members as clearly they are not honest enough to give the World Cup to the bid that actually deserves to host it. In both cases the bid with the lower technical rating won the rights to host the world’s biggest tournament despite a number of indications that both Countries had clear reasons as to why they wouldn’t be suitable. Russia, due to the lack of infrastructure and no commitment from the Government, and Qatar due to the blazing hot temperatures during the period the World Cup is staged and the risk to players and fans alike.

More emphasis needs to be placed upon these technical reports or what is the point in having them at all? There needs to be less emphasis placed upon the opinions, and honesty, of a committee that has once again proven how corrupt they are.

There is also conjecture that this is what Sepp Blatter wanted all along, bringing the World Cup to two untouched regions as FIFA President, he won’t be around for the voting of the 2026 World Cup so this was his last chance to leave a mark, a final legacy if you will.

The only question is, who gets the 2022 World Cup should Qatar be stripped of hosting rights? The USA finished runners up but any of these votes should now be questioned as there is no telling how many votes were based on money changing hands during the process, the only fair way is to have a re-vote.

People are already up in arms about the possibility of the Government forking out another $45 million on a new bid, but they are forgetting the fact that the World Cup would bring billions of dollars into the Australian economy, we already have the majority of the infrastructure to host the tournament, in fact, had South Africa not been ready to host the 2010 World Cup we could have pulled it off at short notice.

Also, our bid has already been made, we wouldn’t be expected to spend millions of dollars on a new bid anyway, I daresay we wouldn’t have to be trying to impress any FIFA Executive Committee members as this task will surely be taken out of their hands should a re-vote be required. So really, what do we have to lose?

Who doesn’t want our Country to host the biggest sporting event in the World? Surely we would be able to host the “best ever” World Cup!
