NAB Cup 2012 – Round 3 Squads

Round 3 of the 2012 NAB Cup kicks off tomorrow night and the squads have now been named for the penultimate fixtures. Most of the big guns are back this week for their first taste of the AFL pre-season. Chris Judd returns from shoulder surgery for the Blues, who have nothing left to really play for but match fitness.

Geelong have named Matthew Scarlett, Corey Enright, Joel Corey, James Kelly, Allen Christensen, James Podsiadly, Paul Chapman and Steve Johnson in a strong looking team.

Hawthorn have named Lance Franklin among others in their squad for round 3, they’ll no doubt be going all out to try and take this cup home.

League converts Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt will go head to head in Albury on Saturday as well.

Check out the team news below and be sure to check out our NAB Cup 2012 round 3 preview which includes tips for each match.

NAB Cup 2012 Preview

ADELAIDE
NAB Cup 2012
Round two (Saturday, March 3): Adelaide v Brisbane, Alice Springs, 7.40pm (EDT).
Round three (Friday, March 9): Adelaide v Collingwood, AAMI Stadium, 8.40pm (EDT).
Odds: $6
Aim: Brenton Sanderson’s Crows will be keen for a good start to the new season.  This was evident by their close win over Port last weekend.  Early on the Crows appear more physical this season however niggling injuries may see some players rested for the remainder of the preseason.  Should beat Brisbane….. tough game the following week against the Pies.  Don’t put any cash on these guys but worth watching.

BRISBANE
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Adelaide v Brisbane, Alice Springs, 7.40pm (EDT).
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Brisbane v Carlton, Maroochydore, 4.40pm (EDT).
Odds: $51
Aim: The Lion’s are in the process of rebuilding.  Unfortunately the rebuilding process does not include their captain Jonathan Brown requiring surgery on a broken cheekbone.  With Brown gone so are their chances in the NAB Cap…. just take a look at their ballooning odds.

CARLTON
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Sunday, March 4): Western Bulldogs v Carlton, Etihad Stadium, 5.40pm (EDT).
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Brisbane v Carlton, Maroochydore, 4.40pm (EDT).
Odds: n/a
Aim: Don’t have high expectations.  Carlton will be looking ahead to the start of the regular season given there are not contenders for this title.  Will probably experiment over the next two weeks so results may not be favorable.

COLLINGWOOD
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Collingwood v Melbourne, Etihad Stadium, 7.40pm (EDT).
Round three: Adelaide v Collingwood, AAMI Stadium, 8.40pm (EDT).
Odds: $4.50
Aim: Nathan Buckley received a good draw for rounds 2 and 3.  Expect a couple of wins and they are definitely a big chance of taking home silverware here!

ESSENDON
NAB Cup 2012
Round two (Saturday, March 3): Essendon v St Kilda, 7pm (EDT), Wangaratta.
Round three (Friday, March 9): Essendon v Sydney, 6.10pm (EDT), Etihad Stadium.
Odds: n/a
Aim: As expected Essendon got dusted in the West during round 1.  They are playing in the middle of nowhere this week.  They will be looking to bounce back and get some sort of preseason form.

FREMANTLE
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Sunday, March 4): Fremantle v Richmond, 5.10pm (EDT), Patersons Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Port Adelaide v Fremantle, 3.40pm (EDT), Victor Harbour.
Odds: $26
Aim: Put some heavy points on the bombers last week.  The boys in purple were hurt by late-season injuries in 2011, so they’ve got more of an excuse for being rusty than other sides.  Dark horse for the competition!

GEELONG
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Friday, March 2): Gold Coast v Geelong, 7.40pm (EDT), Metricon Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Geelong v Richmond, 3.10pm, Simonds Stadium.
Odds: $9
Aim: Great team…. Avoid in this comp.  They just want to avoid injuries and hit the regular season running.  Up and down in the first round…. expect an improvement this weekend against the Gold Coast where they should get more time on the ball.

GOLD COAST SUNS
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Friday, March 2): Gold Coast v Geelong, 7.40pm (EDT), Metricon Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): GWS Giants v Gold Coast, 3.10pm (EDT), Albury.
Odds: $67 (should be $201)
Aim: Round 2 is quite different to round 3 for the Suns.  Unlikely to damage the cats this week but should put some points on the board against GWS!

GWS GIANTS
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Hawthorn v GWS Giants, 3.40pm (EDT), Aurora Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): GWS Giants v Gold Coast, 3.10pm (EDT), Albury.
Odds: $501
Aim: Criticism is inevitable for the fledgling Giants, so all Kevin Sheedy and Co. will be looking for is something to hang their hats on. The kids will use the NAB Cup to acclimatise themselves to AFL footy, allowing the coaches to work out who’s tough enough to take the punishment – mentally as much as physically.

HAWTHORN
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Hawthorn v GWS Giants, 3.40pm (EDT), Aurora Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Melbourne v Hawthorn, 5.40pm (EDT), Etihad Stadium.
Odds: $4
Aim: One of the favorites for the competition but we don’t expect they will be pushing too hard for the wins.  Jack Gunston will be someone to look for during their warm up games…. some cash on these guys at $4 wouldn’t hurt though.

MELBOURNE
NAB Cup 2012
Round two (Saturday, March 3): Collingwood v Melbourne, Etihad Stadium, 7.40pm (EDT).
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Melbourne v Hawthorn, 5.40pm (EDT), Etihad Stadium.
Odds: $101
Aim: Nervous optimism has defined the Demons’ summer, with coach Mark Neeld setting the foundation for a youth-led revival.  The NAB cup will be important to grow confidence throughout the team but no chance of silverware.

NORTH MELBOURNE
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Sydney v North Melbourne, 7pm (EDT), Bruce Perser.
Round three (Sunday, March 11): North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, 3.40pm (EDT), North Ballarat.
Odds: $101
Aim:  Forget the NAB Cup however it will be interesting to see how this team progresses through the regular season.  The Roos finished ninth again last year and seemingly need to convince themselves they can compete with the AFL’s elite.

PORT ADELAIDE
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): West Coast v Port Adelaide, 4.10pm (EDT), Mandurah.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Port Adelaide v Fremantle, 3.40pm (EDT), Victor Harbour.
Odds: $81
Aim: Things can only improve for the Power after a horror 2011 and the recruitment of some experienced bodies and talented youngsters will have hopes high at Alberton. A loss last week was disappointing but this week isn’t going to get better.

RICHMOND
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Sunday, March 4): Fremantle v Richmond, 5.10pm (EDT), Patersons Stadium.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): Geelong v Richmond, 3.10pm, Simonds Stadium.
Odds: $101
Aim:  Some good competition for the Tigers in rounds 2 and 3 will provide them with an indication of where they will start the season.  Importantly, these warm up games will be used to fill the vacant ruck position that Ivan Maric should slot into after joining the club from Adelaide.

ST KILDA
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Essendon v St Kilda, 7pm (EDT), Wangaratta.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): West Coast v St Kilda, 5.10pm (EDT), Patersons Stadium.
Odds: $34
Aim: Hopefully we don’t see a repeat of 2011 where St Kilda was dominated by the schoolgirl sex scandal.  This year there is a new leadership group at the club which indicates the club is traveling in a positive direction.  Don’t expect too much in the preseason…. leave alone if you want a bet.

SYDNEY SWANS
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): Sydney v North Melbourne, 7pm (EDT), Bruce Perser.
Round three (Friday, March 9): Essendon v Sydney, 6.10pm (EDT), Etihad Stadium.
Odds: $26
Aim:  The Swans have historically played poorly in the NAB cup.  Longmire will try a few experiments which will likely continue their traditional poor performance in pre-season matches.

WEST COAST
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Saturday, March 3): West Coast v Port Adelaide, 4.10pm (EDT), Mandurah.
Round three (Saturday, March 10): West Coast v St Kilda, 5.10pm (EDT), Patersons Stadium.
Odds: $3
Aim: A semi-final in last year’s NAB Cup became the springboard for the Eagles’ incredible resurgence, and, with four “home” games scheduled for this year, you’d fancy them to go at least one better this time around.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
NAB Cup 2012

Round two (Sunday, March 14): Western Bulldogs v Carlton, 5.40pm (EDT), Etihad Stadium.
Round three (Sunday, March 11): North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs, 3.40pm (EDT), North Ballarat.
Odds: $101
Aim: Expect the dogs to try hard throughout the preseason to generate some momentum for the regular season.  No Hall or Callan Ward could affect the dogs in their early battles.

NAB Cup 2012 Preview – AFL Pre-season

The AFL is back for 2012 with the start of the pre-season NAB Cup. Although a trophy shouldn’t be allowed for this nuff nuff competition it still allows the AFL to experiment with new rules, allows games to be played in country towns, and gives players some much needed game time before the regular season gets underway.

NAB Cup 2012 Preview

In 2012 there will be four rounds of pre-season matches. As seen in last years competition the first round will involve matches with three teams per game, split over two weeks. The following weeks will see regular matches played across the country. We’ll preview those games at the completion of the Round 1 NAB Cup 2012 fixtures.

Clubs can completely change squads between matches if necessary so it’s a good time to send youth onto the paddock and develop some depth within the club. Matches also include the super goal which is awarded for goals kicked outside the 50, worth a whopping 9 points.

Predicting NAB Cup winners is worse than throwing cash at numbers on the roulette table. Some clubs take it seriously, some clubs don’t and others aren’t sure what they’re doing.  Despite the obvious pitfalls of tipping winners I’ve tried to provide a few certainties…. which will probably turn into a dogs breakfast.

NAB Cup 2012 Fixtures – Round 1:

Week 1:

Hawthorn, Richmond and North Melbourne
Etihad Stadium, Friday Feb 17, 6.45pm

Richmond should be keen for a solid start to the season however North Melbourne and Hawthorn should dominate in these early encounters.

Match 1
Richmond – 0.6.5.41
North Melbourne – 0.7.2.44

Match 2
North Melbourne – 0.4.4.28
Hawthorn – 1.6.8.53

Match 3
Hawthorn – 0.5.7.37
Richmond – 0.6.4.40

GWS, Bulldogs and Collingwood
Blacktown Int’l Sports Park, Saturday Feb 18, 7.15pm

For some reason Sydney isn’t playing in Blacktown despite the AFL trying to group state teams. In any case Collingwood and the Bulldogs will put out second string teams and will get dusted by GWS.  First and last win by GWS all season.

Match 1
GWS – 1.3.3.30
Western Bulldogs – 0.5.5.35

Match 2
Western Bulldogs – 0.3.1.19
Collingwood – 0.4.2.26

Match 3
Collingwood – 0.5.5.35
GWS – 0.5.2.32

West Coast, Fremantle and Essendon
Pattersons Stadium, Sunday Feb 19, 1.45pm (AEDST)

Essendon is flying west for a pasting. Despite a few potential injuries West Coast looks too strong for everyone and Fremantle should be a clear second.

Match 1
West Coast - 0.9.3.57
Essendon – 0.5.6.36

Match 2
Essendon - 0.3.2.20
Fremantle – 1.7.5.56

Match 3
Fremantle - 0.1.4.10
West Coast – 0.4.6.30

Week 2:

Geelong, St Kilda and Sydney
Etihad Stadium, Friday Feb 24, 6.40pm

Pre-season or not, Geelong will dominate this group. Sydney still reminds me of Paul Roos who put more thought into his son’s under 10 games than a pre-season fixture.

Match 1
St Kilda – 0.4.5.29
Sydney – 0.9.5.59

Match 2
Sydney – 0.2.1.13
Geelong – 0.4.5.29

Match 3
St Kilda – 1.3.9.36
Geelong – 1.0.6.15

Gold Coast, Brisbane and Melbourne
Metricon Stadium, Saturday Feb 25, 7.10pm (AEDST)

This is one of the closest groups. Gold Coast should want a few wins on the board to generate momentum while Brisbane have Merett and Brown back on the paddock. Melbourne need a few more weeks to generate a solid side so it will be one of the Queensland teams to top the group.

Match 1
Gold Coast – 0.4.2.26
Melbourne – 0.3.5.23

Match 2
Melbourne – 0.2.1.13
Brisbane – 0.1.4.10

Match 3
Brisbane – 0.2.6.18
Gold Coast – 0.2.4.16

Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Carlton
AAMI Stadium, Sunday Feb 26, 2.40pm

Carlton should take care of the South Australian teams.  Port should take this competition slightly more seriously than its state colleague so I suspect Adelaide will be the biggest loser in this group.

Match 1
Port Adelaide – 0.6.10.46
Carlton – 1.5.1.40

Match 2
Carlton – 0.5.4.34
Adelaide – 1.5.4.43

Match 3 -
Adelaide – 0.2.6.18
Port Adelaide – 0.2.5.17
