English Premier League – 2011/12 Summer Transfer Window Roundup

So another exciting transfer window has passed us by, all deals had to be completed by midnight (BST) on August the 31st. A number of late moves occurred but surprisingly Tottenham and Manchester City were not very involved on the incoming player front, Tottenham, however, were extremely busy in the form of outgoings with no less than 5 players heading for the exit on deadline day and just Scott Parker coming in within the last 24 hours of the window. They lost Crouch, Bentley, Hutton, Palacios and Jermaine Jenas all on deadline day.

The busiest club over the last couple of days though on the incoming player front was Arsenal, with 5 experienced players being signed after their disastrous start to the season. One of those signings in Mikel Arteta went right down to the wire, with confirmation of the signing only coming after the window had closed. They also tied up deals for Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos, a Brazialian left back, Park Chu Young from Monaco and Yossi Benayoun on loan for the season from Chelsea.

Another big transfer was Raul Meireles to Chelsea from Liverpool, the midfielder handing in a transfer request late on deadline day to get his move to be with former manager Andre Villas-Boas once again. This left little time for Liverpool to find a replacement but they did manage a coup of their own with Craig Bellamy returning to his old club from Manchester City.

Here is a round-up of all the transfer activity for each Premier League club, bear in mind that some deals may still filter through throughout the day as confirmation comes through from the clubs.

English Premier League – Transfer Roundup 24 June 2011

With just a couple of weeks left before pre-season training begins for the 2011-12 season, transfers are high on the agenda for many a Premier League club. The silly season won’t really heat up until the International Transfer window opens on 1 July, but here is a recap of what has transpired so far, as well as what is likely to happen in the weeks to come.

We’ll start with Manchester United who have started their buying early this year. So far they have acquired Phil Jones from Blackburn, a good young defender but perhaps a bit overpriced at 16.5m Pounds. They are also on the verge of tying up a deal for Aston Villa winger Ashley Young, reportedly in the region of 20m Pounds. Young Athletico Madrid keeper David de Gea looks to be next on Sir Alex Ferguson’s wish list as he tries to tie up all of his summer deals early.

Chelsea have just appointed a new manager in Andre Villas-Boas and this will no doubt bring about some changes to the playing roster. They have been quiet so far with no confirmed signings as yet, but Abramovich was not likely to be sanctioning any deals until the new manager was appointed. There are reports that Villas-Boas would like to take Porto striker Falcao with him to Stamford Bridge, and the Columbian has a 26m Pound release clause so definitely not out of their price range. Other possibilities are Luka Modric from Tottenham, Brazilian whiz kid Neymar, and João Moutinho (also from Porto).

Manchester City have been surprisingly quiet in the transfer market so far, but that will more than likely change once July 1 arrives and players from outside of England are able to be signed. Players rumoured to be on their radar are Lyon’s promising left back Aly Cissokho, who won’t come cheap if Lyon’s transfer history is anything to go by. They are also rumoured to be interested in Alexis Sanchez from Udinese and Jack Rodwell from Everton.

Arsenal are reportedly set for a big summer in the transfer market as Arsene Wenger tries to plug the gaps that have led the club to 6 years without a trophy. The news so far has mainly surrounded the possible departures of a number of players including Fabregas, Nasri, Clichy, Bendtner and Denilson. The latter two not too concerning but they will want to hang on to Fabregas and Nasri at all costs. Defence is the key for them this summer and they are reportedly after both Chris Samba and Gary Cahill, with reports from today also suggesting that Everton’s Phil Jagielka is also on their radar. They have signed young defender Carl Jenkinson from Charlton and are also after a winger with Gervinho and Ricky Alvarez reported targets.

Tottenham, with no Champions League football to offer this year, are going to find it tough to hold onto their star players let alone bring in any top quality players to the club. So far they have only brought in veteran keeper Brad Friedel. In the footsteps of Arsenal, they are reportedly also going after Gary Cahill in a bid to bolster their defence, but Cahill seems to be looking for Champions League football. Harry is looking for a couple of big signings to keep his current crop of stars happy, with Luka Modric wanting out and the possibility of more following him. Also on Harry’s radar is Espanyol striker Pablo Osvaldo and Athletico Madrid’s striker Diego Forlan.

Liverpool started the summer with a bang, snapping up Sunderland’s Jordan Henderson for a reported fee of 20m Pounds, as with Phil Jones overpriced due to being English it seems. Also on King Kenny’s radar are Stewart Downing from Aston Villa, Charles N’Zogbia from Wigan and Gael Clichy from Arsenal, highly unlikely though as Wenger would not want to strengthen a rival. The Reds are also said to be after Ipswich’s young striker Connor Wickham, the 18 year old also reportedly the subject of interest from Sunderland and Arsenal. Interest in Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is still said to be quite high with Liverpool considering a bid for the playmaker.

Everton are keen to hold onto in demand left back Leighton Baines, with reported interest from a number of clubs. David Moyes is looking at Shane Long from Reading to add to his strike power, and also Wes Brown from Manchester United has been touted as a possible signing in the last 24 hours. They will also have to guard against interest in centre back Phil Jagielka with Arsenal looking to renew their interest if they fail to sign Samba or Cahill.

Fulham and new manager Martin Jol have started their summer with the imminent arrival of Carlos Kameni from Espanyol to provide Schwarzer with competition in what could be his last year at the club. Up front is another area that the club may look to strengthen, names thrown around for a move are Kevin Doyle from Wolves and Robbie Keane from Spurs who could be interested in linking with his former manager.

In other transfer news & rumours Aston Villa are lining up Ben Foster and Wes Brown, with the money they will receive for Ashley Young a new winger may also be brought in to replace him. Sunderland will also look to bolster their side with the funds received from the Henderson sale, with Darren Gibson, David N’Gog and Sebastian Larsson all being looked at.

West Brom are reportedly looking at Real Mallorca striker Pierre Webo and former player Zoltan Gera, Scott Carson and last years top scorer Peter Odemwingie are rumoured to be on their way out. Newcastle have brought in a number of players already with Yohan Cabaye and and Demba Ba joining in the last week, Adel Taarabt and Daniel Sturridge on loan are the other likely additions with Jose Enrique and Joey Barton reportedly the subject of interest from other clubs and could leave the club.

For the newly promoted clubs, signing premier league class players is crucial and Norwich have got the ball rolling with the purchase of James Vaughan from Everton with Huddersfield winger Anthony Pilkington also likely to join the Canaries. QPR are looking at Jay Boothroyd to boost their strike force and are also looking to steal Daniel Sturridge on loan from under the noses of Newcastle. Swansea have started their summer buying with Danny Graham from Watford and are also looking at Polish goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski, they’re marquee signing, however, could be Marcos Senna from Villareal with reports that they are close to securing his signature.

We will be producing a weekly round-up of all the transfers throughout the summer, right up to the deadline on 31 August so make sure to tune in over the coming months for all of the latest news in regards to transfers in, out and all of the freshest rumours.
